Want more advice on how to protect your eyes from macular degeneration? Well, you're in the right place! A few days ago I created an Instagram post which summarized a very interesting research study on macular degeneration prevention. I often discuss this study with my patients. I feel so strongly about the benefits of preventive medicine that I am reposting it here. Enjoy!

Today is the last day of AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration) Awareness Month. I couldn’t end February without giving you some more advice on protecting your eyes from macular degeneration: A “Healthy Lifestyle” is associated with 71% (approximately 3-fold) lower odds of developing AMD.* A “Healthy Lifestyle” is defined as the combination of the following three factors: ➡ Being Physically Active - This includes all types of exercise. Good news! Everything counts - even low-impact activities like household chores and walking (the pic below shows me doing laps around my office).
➡ No Tobacco Smoking - In multiple studies, tobacco use is the strongest modifiable risk factor for developing AMD.
➡ Eating Healthy - In this study, eating healthy means following the US Dietary Guidelines (for more info on this, see health.gov). In general, for healthy eyes, I recommend getting one’s nutrients in natural, whole foods and not particular supplements. Even if you are not down with the Mediterranean diet (see my previous post), healthy food choices still matter!
So what are you waiting for? Get moving! #healthylifestyle
