World Sight Day is the annual day in which we focus on the worldwide problem of preventable blindness. Here are some fast facts:
Globally, ~2.2 billion people have vision impairment
Approx. half have preventable problems or have no access to treatment
Top causes of vision loss: not having glasses (uncorrected refractive error) and cataracts
Can you believe that? People in this world are visually impaired because they simply can’t afford or can’t get glasses! It's so sad because we have the technology and know-how, but we don't have enough resources directed at this global problem.
There are a lot of amazing nonprofits and eye doctors fighting the good fight and I respect each and every one of them. They are doing great work...but more work needs to be done.
Every day, my colleagues and I work to fight preventable blindness. Are you with me?
