Happy World Sight Day!

Over 1 billion people suffer from a treatable cause of impaired vision or blindness.
Over 1 billion people suffer from a treatable cause of impaired vision or blindness.

Today is World Sight Day. The purpose of World Sight Day is to raise awareness for the global need to fight blindness.

Did you know that, worldwide, over 1 billion people suffer from impaired vision or blindness, but all they need are glasses? They can’t afford glasses or there’s no eye doctor around to help.

Imagine children who can’t see because they don’t have glasses. They may be labeled “slow” or dumb. They are at risk for doing poorly in school and having poor self-confidence. Imagine how this could affect a child’s entire life. Then multiply this problem throughout an entire impoverished community or country. For communities already struggling to break a cycle of poverty, this is yet another difficult hurdle to overcome.

Even before the coronovirus pandemic, the pandemic of preventable blindness has existed.
Even before the coronovirus pandemic, the pandemic of preventable blindness has existed.

I recognize the urgency of our current fight against #COVID19 and how it has made access to all types of medical care challenging. But even before the #coronovirus pandemic, the pandemic of preventable blindness has existed. Let’s work together to fight it! Who’s with me?
